OK Kino brought a taste of Moldovia to London Fashion Week this fall. During Fashion Scout's Ones to Watch showcase, designers Darya Golneva and Denis Caunov debuted a spring/summer collection grounded in their strong cultural heritage. Each architectural piece featured meticulous detail and traditional craftsmanship, demonstrating not only skill when it comes to design, but also culture and history. We asked Golneva a few questions about what went on behind the scenes, below.
How do you go about preparing for fashion week?
Darya Golneva: Through a reinterpretation of traditional craftsmanship techniques in a contemporary context, our collection pays homage to the rich heritage of Moldovan rituals. Central to our ethos is the preservation of artisanal techniques, where we find liberation in the transformative act of creation.
The major milestones on the way to Fashion Week were shaped by this dedicationโsourcing deadstock materials, working with local artisans, and perfecting the details that explore the delicate interplay between beauty and imperfection, echoing the complexities of rural life and the essence of communal celebration.
What inspired your SSโ25 collection?
The SSโ25 collection was deeply inspired by Moldovan rural life, from traditional caroling costumes to knitted details reminiscent of hand-knitted doilies, used for covering the most precious household items. We aimed to create a bridge between past and present, honoring the rich cultural heritage of Moldova while reinterpreting these artisanal techniques in a contemporary context.
Each detail in the collection reflects this connection, with a focus on the delicate balance between beauty and imperfection. There is a strong sense of tradition, but also liberation in the way we rework these elements for modern silhouettes. The collection is light yet substantial, versatile but imbued with meaning. Itโs filled with quiet references to communal celebration, which we hope resonate with those who appreciate craftsmanship and the stories behind the garments.
What did it feel like to show at Fashion Week?
Showing at Fashion Week is a deeply humbling experience. Itโs an intense culmination of months of work, but when the collection finally comes to life on the runway, thereโs a moment of stillnessโan appreciation for the journey.
For us, itโs not just about the presentation; itโs about connecting with others, sharing our story, and seeing how it resonates.
As individual designers, it's a proud moment to see our ideas translated into something tangible. As a brand, it means a great deal to have this platform to present our work and engage with a wider audience. London Fashion Week represents both a milestone and a motivation for us to continue growing, evolving, and refining our voice.
